The mission of Tailgate for Troops, Inc. is to increase the morale and welfare of active duty service members and veterans through hosting tailgate parties at collegiate and professional sporting events, free of charge. Tailgate for Troops will also, from time to time, distribute donated funds to organizations qualifying under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, which provide notable services to active duty service members and/or veterans.
As the United States has been at war for 15 years, a generation of America’s sons and daughters has endured the trials and tribulations of combat. Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines and Cost Guardsmen have spent years away from their families and friends, toiled through hot Iraqi summers and cold Afghan winters, and have, in some cases, selflessly given up their limbs and lives to ensure the American Citizens’ security. The goal of our organization is to honor the service and sacrifices of our American Heroes by offering our sincerest thanks in the form of food and beverage - at no cost to the Service Members - at a variety of collegiate and professional sporting events, while they enjoy the freedoms for which they have fought so hard.
Tailgate for Troops was founded by a group Americans who have served and supported military causes and who now seek to serve the nation by tailgating for the Troops and advancing the principles of pre-game philanthropy.
In 2003, three men, Jeff Webster, Chris Wood and Kent Waterman, along with their families, met after the Army-Air Force game in Colorado Springs, CO to share a meal and to make plans for the game two years later. Jeff suggested that the group organize a small tailgate party before the next game and allow any excess food and drink to go to recent Academy graduates or active duty Soldiers. In 2005, that suggestion became reality and the baseline for future events. In 2007, Jeff, his wife, Bennie, and Chris were joined by Rob and Wendy Fong in hosting a larger pre-game party, in concert with a number of Chris’ recently commissioned West Point classmates. The group recognizes this event as the first official Tailgate for Troops. In 2009, with Chris was deployed to Iraq, Jeff partnered with a group of Fort Carson and Fort Bliss officers to set a higher standard for the event. With over 500 people stopping by the tailgate, the group served scores of active duty servicemen and veterans and began to establish a name for themselves.
After achieving exempt status in 2011, the organization has held the premier tailgate at all of the Army-Navy Games. Among the tailgates, we have hosted approximately 3,000 people annually and raised more than $200,000 for T4T and our partner charities, Paws & Stripes, Hope For The Warriors® and Homes for our Troops.
